Dr. Mardy Darian, an internationally-acclaimed palm specialist and horticulturalist has spent the past 45 years cultivating a rainforest on his 3-acre hilltop estate in Vista, California. Dr. Darian has collected over 100 genera of palm for his magnificent garden; it is perhaps the most exotic collection of tropical and subtropical plants on earth. In the garden, mature 75-foot tall canopy trees tower over a pristine collection of palms, aroids, bromeliads, cycads, filicies, vines and epiphytes. The unique topography of the site includes 6-8 micro-climates, enabling Dr. Darian to cultivate over 500 species of tropical and subtropical plants in a frost-free environment.outdoors. One highlight of the garden is his collection of over 300 FCC Cattleya orchids growing on trees and tree ferns from 25 different countries. Land Conservation Brokerage, Inc. is promoting the creation of a science and research center at the Darian Garden, to preserve Dr. Darian's legacy and to and allow researchers and the public access to the garden.
